Education requirements in Aged Care
Although there is no specific requirement regarding what education is provided the Quality of Care Principles require at Schedule 2 7 Standard 7 Human Resources (3)(c)that:
(c) the workforce is competent and the members of the workforce have the qualifications and knowledge to effectively perform their roles;
There is no legislation or information about what this entails. However, generally what is expected is education such as:
Mandatory education for all staff;
Dementia education for all staff who interact with residents. This may indeed include all staff;
Palliative care education for care staff. This may include registered nurses, enrolled nurses and team leaders (by whatever title they are employed);
MANDATORY
Mandatory education will be variable depending on the state/territory of the home, and the home’s own policies and procedures but will almost definitely include:
Fire safety education;
Food safety education – specifically for any staff who are involved in the preparation of food;
High impact high prevalence risks – for registered nurses, enrolled and team leaders
Infection control;
Manual handling education;
Medication management;
Reportable incidents/ Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS) ;
Since the introduction of the Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS) on 1 April 2021 for the first requirement of this scheme, education regarding SIRS is expected. This would replace the Reportable Incidents education which may previously have been part of your mandatory education program. Given the significant changes to the reportable requirements of SIRS, it is strongly recommended that if this is not part of your mandatory education program, that you include it as soon as you can.
